Right bang in the middle of Auckland City is a real nice old cemetery. I used to cut through the nice top half of Symonds St cemetery often when I lived in Mt Eden and would walk into town at the weekends, but I had never really explored the more wild, hidden section underneath the motorway on the opposite side of the road. Probably becuase its creepy as all hell and I thought I might get murdered, but hey – I gave it a shot a few years back and finally got the film back from the lab for you to enjoy. Spoiler alert! I did not get murdered.
This cemetery was the first “official” cemetery in Auckland, which means by New Zealand standards it is hella old. What was once a beautiful, overgrown gully was turned into a cemetery in 1841, which in turn has since had a motorway thrown across the top of it. There is a lot more accurate and interesting history to read about over here.
